Watchman

Facilitating the delivery of virtual follow-up visits for testicular cancer survivors.

Testicular cancer impacts males between ages 20-35. Testicular cancer survivors often face barriers accessing specialty care. Watchman aims to facilitate the delivery of virtual follow-up visits for testicular cancer survivors
in the active surveillance phase of their cancer journey.

Survivorship care for testicular cancer patients.

Watchman has been deployed at UHN since December 2017 as a pilot randomized controlled trial where patients were randomized into a control group (in-person care) or an interventional group (virtual care). In collaboration with Dr. Rob Hamilton at University Health Network, we aim to build upon the success of the Watchman pilot randomized controlled trial, and operationalize Watchman as a standard of care program for testicular cancer patients in Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

>100
patients enrolled.

>330
asynchronous visits completed.

70%
of patients have high visit compliance, clinical safety and patient and provider satisfaction.

The approach

We are enhancing the features of Watchman by building the web application on our existing Ned technology. Watchman will adopt the concept of an asynchronous visit care model, which is a series of sequential tasks that both patients and providers complete within a scheduled timeframe in alignment with clinical guidelines of follow-up care for specific conditions:

  • Patients will conduct their routine follow-up tasks as per their active surveillance protocol which ranges from every 2 months to yearly.

  • Providers will review their imaging and lab results on the Watchman Clinician App. They will generate a care plan for patients to view on the Watchman Patient App that denotes the next steps

Highlights

Instant messaging

Messaging feature that allows patient users to synchronously connect with
their care team members.

Dedicated navigator

A navigator who will liaise with
specialists specialists and issue referrals for community support as necessary
for patients.

Journey map

A cancer survivorship journey map
that will highlight important
milestones for patient users.

By 2023, we aim to launch Watchman in Princess Margaret Cancer Centre as a standard of care for testicular cancer patients. We will aim to enroll over 300 patients in the first year of launch.
